Glad Tiding to Sayyiduna Ibrahim

Chapter Six

Supplication of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (عليه السلام) for the Prophet ﷺ

  1. The Supplication of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (عليه السلام) Imam Ibn Jareer (d. 310 AH) extracted in his Tafsir (exegesis) of the Qur’an from Sayyiduna Abu al-Aaliya (رضي الله عنه) that Sayyiduna Ibrahim (عليه السلام) supplicated:
    رَبَّنَا وَابْعَثْ فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِّنْهُمْ يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِكَ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ ۗ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ
“Our Lord! And send towards them a Noble Messenger, from amongst them, to recite to them Your verses, and to instruct them in Your Book and sound wisdom, and to fully purify them; indeed You only are the Almighty, the Wise.”1 It was said to him (عليه السلام): “Your request has been granted. He will be in the final era.” Imam Ahmad (d. 241 AH), Imam Hakim (d. 405 AH) and Imam Baihaqi (d. 458 AH) narrate from Sayyiduna ‘Irbadh Ibn Saariyah (رضي الله عنه) who stated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “I am the supplication of my father, Ibrahim and the glad tiding of ‘Isa (عليهم السلام).”
  2. The Prophet ﷺ Describes Himself Imam Ibn ‘Asaakir (d. 571 AH) extracted a narration from Sayyiduna ‘Ubadah Ibn Saamit (رضي الله عنه) who stated that it was said, “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Inform us about yourself.” He ﷺ said, “I am the supplication of my father, Ibrahim (عليه السلام) and the last of those who gave glad tidings in relation to me was ‘Isa son of Maryam (عليه وعليها الصلاة والسلام).”
  3. The Supplication at the Foundation of the Ka’bah Imam Ibn Sa’d (d. 230 AH) extracted a narration from the chain of Juwaybir from Sayyiduna Dahhaak (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet ﷺ said, “I am the supplication of my father, (Sayyiduna) Ibrahim (عليه السلام).” He supplicated when laying the foundations of the Ka’bah:
    رَبَّنَا وَابْعَثْ فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِّنْهُمْ يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِكَ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ ۭ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ
“Our Lord! And send towards them a Noble Messenger, from amongst them, to recite to them Your verses, and to instruct them in Your Book and sound wisdom, and to fully purify them; indeed You only are the Almighty, the Wise.”2 Allah ﷻ accepted his supplication and fulfilled his wish.
