Words of Kufr in regards to
Knowledge and Scholars

Important Note:

There are different words that are used in this text such as ‘Takfeer’ which means it is without any doubt what-so-ever clear Kufr and one will be out of the folds of Islam.

The term ‘is a Kafir,’ ‘will be Kufr,’ ‘are words/statement of Kufr’ and ‘is Kufr’ are similar, however, depending on the (Urf) custom of the time or environment in the community it could have different meaning, hence, the Fatwa of Kufr will not be given. This can only be done by a qualified Mufti.

These statements are real examples of Kufr that have been said by people from the time of the great jurists over 1000 years ago till today and not made up. All the references have been provided from books of these great jurist.

1. There is fear of Kufr on one keeping hatred towards a Scholar without any reason. i

2. If a scholar trimmed his moustache or kept the tail (Shimla) of his Amama (head gear)and someone with disrespect said, how bad dose that look, the order of Kufr will apply as one has disrespected the scholar or his knowledge. ii

3. If a scholar was sat on a high place and people are around him jokingly ask questions and hit him with pillows, then the order of Kufr will be on all of them. iii

4. Whoso jokingly mimics a person who teaches the Qur’aan meaning holds a stick and is explaining to the children, there will be the order of Kufr as the person teaching the Qur’aan is similar to the scholars

of Shari’ah, to joke about the Qur’aan or person teaching the Qur’aan, is Kufr. iv

5. If a person has come from a gathering of knowledge, another said, has he come from the church, is a Kafir. v

6. It is said to someone; let’s go to a gathering of knowledge, the other said, who can do that which they tell us, the order of Kufr will be on such a person as it shows that the Shari’ah has ordered more than our strength and this is Kufr. vi

7. Whoso said the things that the scholars inform us, who can do them; this statement is Kufr, as this is proving that the Shari’ah has ordered more than our strength or the scholars have fabricated lies about the prophets (Allah forbid). vii

8. If someone as a joke or in anger said, do not go to the gathering of knowledge if you go than your wife will be divorced, the order of Kufr will be on such. viii

9. If someone said, why should I learn knowledge? This statement is Kufr, when learning knowledge is thought as humiliating or thought there is no need for knowledge. ix

10. Whoso said, “Plate of food is better than knowledge,” this statement is Kufr. x

11. To say ignorance is better than knowledge or an ignorant is better than a scholar, this statement is of Kufr, xi when the intent is disrespect of knowledge.

12. Whoso with the intent of disrespect threw the Fatwa (Islamic ruling) of a Scholar on the floor or said, what is Shari’ah? This is Kufr. xii

13. Whoso said, curse be upon the knowledgeable husband, this statement is Kufr as he has cursed an attribute of a scholar or disrespected the Shari’ah. xiii

14. Whoso (with disrespect) called a scholar ‘Uwaylim1 or called an ‘Alawi as ‘Ulaywi,2 has done Kufr. xiv

5 A person on Hajj was drinking orange juice and a great jurist told him this is not allowed in the state of Ihram due to the fragrance, this ignorant man said, you scholars make the religion very difficult. The scholar said, if you wanted to quench your thirst you can have water. The problem with people today is that they are too open minded and ignorant and challenge even scholars, these people should take head and stop following your desire and submit to Allah (The Exalted), His Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and the true scholars of Islam (may Allah preserve them).

15. If someone called a book of knowledge a Darawni, 3 has done Kufr. xv

16. To keep a grudge against a scholar because of his knowledge is Kufr, meaning because he is a scholar. xvi

17. To disrespect a book of Fiqh (Islamic Law) is Kufr. xvii

18. One who goes against the Ijma’ Qat‘i4 is a Kafir. xviii

19. To say, “What do scholars know?” is Kufr, xix when it is to degrade scholars.

20. Whoso says all the scholars are bad, meaning to call all scholars evil, is the order of Kufr. xx

21. The scholars have ruined the country, are words of Kufr. xxi

22. To say scholars have disintegrated the religion is Kufr.

23. To say “Allah (The Exalted) revealed an easy religion but the scholars have made it difficult,”5 is Kufr. xxii

24. Whoso says, the scholars that teach knowledge are only stories, or their desires, or just deception, or I oppose the knowledge of tricks

25. Whoso says, what shall I do with knowledge, there should be money in the pocket, there is the order of Kufr on such a person.

26. Whoso said to a scholar “Go and safeguard your knowledge in a utensil” is Kufr. xxiv

27. Whoso says, to cause mischief is better than becoming a scholar, the order of Kufr will apply.
