Honouring Guest
CHAPTER TWENTY
Honoring the guest
1 See Volume One, Chapter Sixty One for this Sunnah
O Allah (The Exalted) bless our master Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) as befits his legitimate rank.
Fride states that respect is to look after guests and make them happy. If you do not honour and respect them then there is no point of having them in the house and therefore eating with them. One should sit with their guests and talk to them which will enable them to find out their likes and dislikes and the guest will not feel shy before the host.i
i The Fride story
ii Tirmidhi
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) who said “Whosoever believes in Almighty Allah and the Day of Resurrection should respect his guest”.
Abu Lahoos Jismi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father, he says ‘I asked the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) I went to a person’s house he did not look after me (as a guest), he has now come to my house, shall I look after him or get my own back?’ The messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) replied, ‘Look after him.’ ii
This was the beautiful character of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) may Allah (The Exalted) give us a drop of the character of His beloved, Ameen!
