Chapter Four

The Prophet صَىلَّ الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلم being mentioned in the Adhan1 during the era of Sayyiduna Aadam عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلََم and in the Highest Kingdom

1. Imam Abu Nu’aym (d. 430 AH) رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه in Al-Hilyah and Al-Imam Ibn ‘Asakir (d. 571 AH) رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه narrate from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah رَضَِِ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ that the Messenger of Allah صَلَّ الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلم said:

“(Sayyiduna) Aadam عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلََم descended to India (Sarandeep – modern day Sri Lanka) and felt lonely and estranged. (Sayyiduna) Jibreel عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلََم descended and recited the Adhan (call to prayer):

اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ — Allah is The Greatest
اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ — Allah is The Greatest

(twice) أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ — I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah (عَزَّوَجَلَّ)
(twice) وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُوْلُ اللّٰهِ — I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (صَلَّ الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلم)

Sayyiduna Aadam عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلََم asked, “Who is Muhammad (صَلَّ الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلم)?” Sayyiduna Jibreel عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلََم said, “He is the last of the Prophets (عَـلَـيْهِمُ السَّلََم) amongst your children.”

2. Imam Bazzaar (d.292 AH) رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه narrates from Sayyiduna ‘Ali رَضَِِ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ who said:

“When Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ willed to teach the Adhan to His Prophet صَلَّ الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلم, Sayyiduna Jibreel عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلََم came with an animal called Buraq. When the Prophet صَلَّ الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلم intended to ride the Buraq, it became nervous (startled). Sayyiduna Jibreel عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلََم said, “Be steady, by Allah (عَزَّوَجَلَّ), no bondsman more virtuous than (Sayyiduna) Muhammad (صَلَّ الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلم) has ever mounted you.”

The Prophet صَلَّ الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلم mounted it until they came to a great veil near the Court of the Merciful (اللّٰهُ عَزَّوَجَلَّ). An Angel came from behind the veil and said:
اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ – اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ — Allah is The Greatest, Allah is The Greatest

It was said from behind the veil: صدق عبدي لا إله إلا أنا — “My bondsman spoke the truth, there is none worthy of worship but I.”

Then the Angel said: وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُوْلُ اللّٰهِ — I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (صَلَّ الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلم)
It was said from behind the veil: صدق عبدي أنا أرسلت محمدا — “My servant spoke the truth. I sent Muhammad as a Messenger.”

After this, the Angel said: حي على الصلاة — Rush to prayer
حي على الفلاح — Rush to success
قد قامت الصلاة — Prayer is to begin

Then he said: اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ — Allah is The Greatest
It was said from behind the veil: صدق عبدي أنا أكبر أنا أكبر — “My servant spoke the truth. I am the Greatest, I am the Greatest.”

Then the Angel said: لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ — There is no deity except Allah
It was said from behind the veil: صدق عبدي لا إله إلا أنا — “My bondsman spoke the truth, there is none worthy of worship but I.”

After this, the Angel held the hand of the Prophet صَلَّ الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلم and sent him forward. Sayyiduna Aadam and Sayyiduna Nuh (عَـلَـيْهِمُ السَّلَام) were amongst the dwellers of the heavens. Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ completed the nobility of the Prophet صَلَّ الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلم over the dwellers of the heavens and the earth on that day.
