Tayyamum

Lesson Six

TAYAMMUM (SUBSTITUTE FOR GHUSL/ WUDU)

Tayammum is a substitute and can only be used when there is a valid Shari’ ‘Excuse’.

Factors Permitting Tayammum

1. UNAVAILABILITY OF WATER

  • Distance within a mile radius (A person must search for the water if he is inclined to believe that there may be water available)
  • Unable to extract water

2. FEAR OF HARM

  • • Illness.
  • • Wounds/burns.
  • • “extremely” excessively cold water.
  • • Fear of danger (so water available, but there is a fear of harm in obtaining it due to something/someone

3. FEAR OF MISSING NAMAZ

  • If ‘Water Available’- but time extremely short that namaz will elapse if one carried out bathing or wudu, so (fear of namaz becoming qaza), then allowed to pray with tayammum, but namaz has to be repeated after with bathing/wudu. E.g – one wakes up late for Fajr and a few mins left to perform it. * if one wakes in the state of needing a bath, then one should clean themselves from impurities before performing tayammum*
  • Also allowed for Eid/ Janaaza namaz – as there is no Qaza for these salahs. if not enough time to do wudu and join the prayer before it finishes, then one can perform tayammum and pray

3 Fardh of Tayammum

1. Intention – in the heart is compulsory and it is also better to say (I am performing tayammum of wudu/bathing, to purify myself for worship- due to not being able to perform wudu/bath with water).

2. Striking ground/usable substances with one’s hand and wiping the face.

3. striking ground/ usable substances with one’s hand and wiping arms.

6 Sunnahs of Tayammum

1. Starting with Tasmiyyah (Bismillah).

2. Following sequence.

3. Continuation.

4. Move hands to and from the soil / usable substance.

5. To shake one’s hands after striking the ground / usable substance to remove excess dust or soil on the hands.

6. To have fingers apart, when striking the soil.

Objects of Tayammum USABLE

NOT USEABLE

  • stones
  • soil
  • sand
  • slate
  • lime
  • sulphate
  • jasper
  • brimstone
  • emerald etc

all the above natural objects of Tayammum do not need any

dust to be on them

  • Grass – and anything ‘burnable’
  • Metals- and anything ‘meltable’
  • Tarmac/painted walls – and anything ‘man made’

If enough dust has gathered on the surfaces of the above or any non-useable object/ substances – that a handprint can be made on them– the dust itself can be used for Tayammum
