Respect of The Wives

34. RESPECT TO THE WIVES OF THE PROPHET

The Sahaba showed great respect to the consorts of the Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam). When one of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam)’s wives passed away, Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Abbas fell in prostration. People asked him the reason. He said: “The Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) has said whenever you see any sign of the Doomsday, fall in prostration. What else will be the bigger sign than the demise of the Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam)’s wife?” 1

When the funeral procession of Sayyidah Maimoona, the Glorious Prophet of Islam (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam)’s wife, was taken out at a place called Saraf, Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Abbas said to his colleagues: “She is Maimoona, the embodiment of Peace. When you raise her bier, don’t shake or move it, but honour it.” 2

Many Sahaba dedicated their properties to the consorts of the Beloved Habbeb (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) showing their allegiance to them. Sayyiduna Abdur Rahmaan Bin Awf had donated his property to the wives of the Glorious Prophet of Islam (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam), which was sold for forty thousand Dirhams. He had also dedicated an orchard, which was sold for four hundred thousand Dirhams. 3

Sayyiduna Omar, during his tenure as Caliph, had prepared nine bowls corresponding to the number of the wives of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam). Whenever he received dry fruits or other gifts, he used to fill the bowls and send to the wives of the Beloved Habbeb (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam). 4

along with him. He appointed Sayyiduna Uthman and Sayyiduna Abdur Rahmaan Bin Awf as their escort. They walked ahead of the conveyance of the Mothers of the Believers and did not allow anyone to come closer to them. Whenever the caravan stopped over, the wives of the Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) stayed close to Sayyiduna Omar’s tent. Sayyiduna Uthman and Sayyiduna Abdur Rahmaan regularly guarded their tents and did not allow anyone to come closer. 5
