In Praise

27. IN PRAISE OF THE HOLY PROPHET (SALLALLHU ALAIHI WASSALLAM)

The Holy Quraan and the sayings of the Glorious Prophet of Islam (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) excelled the poetry of Arabia. The Sahaba, however, composed couplets in praise of the Beloved Habbeb (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) and since this poetry represented the true feelings of the Sahaba, it impressed the listeners.

Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Ruwahah, Sayyiduna Ka’b Bin Zuhair and Sayyiduna Hassaan Bin Thaabit were always engaged in composing eulogies adorning Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam). Bukhari has reported some couplets composed by Abdullah Bin Ruwahah. He says: “The Apostle of Allah is among us. He recites the Book of Allah when the day dawns. He led us to light and took us out of the darkness of ignorance. Our hearts believe, whatever he has said is going to happen. He is awake throughout the nights while the idolaters remain in deep slumber.”

Sayyiduna Ka’b Bin Zuhair called on the Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) and recited to him his famous eulogy. The Glorious Prophet of Islam (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) asked the Sahaba to listen to it carefully. 1

Sayyiduna Abu Hamamah Salim was a poet and he said to the Beloved Habbeb (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam): “O Allah’s Apostle ! I have written an eulogy in praise of Allah and His Messenger.” The Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) said: “Recite what you have written in praise of Allah and postpone the other thing for some other time”. 2
