16.YEARNING FOR THE PROPHET’S

Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) BLESSINGS The Sahaba got themselves blessed with the personality of the Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) in different ways. They used to take their ailing children to the Glorious Prophet of Islam (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) who put his hand on their head or put a piece of date after chewing into their mouth and blessed them. Sayyiduna Saib Bin Yazeed says: “When I fell sick, my aunt took me to the Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) who put his hand on my head and blessed me. Then he made ablution. I drank the water of his ablution.” When a son was born to Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash’ari, he took him to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) who named him and then put a piece of date into his mouth after chewing it and blessed him. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) sometimes put the water from his mouth into the mouths of the sick children; sometimes he put his saliva in their mouths and sometimes caressed their eyes with his hand. 1 Sayyiduna Zahra Bin Ma’bad, a companion of the Glorious Prophet of Islam (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) was still a child when his mother brought him to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) and said: “Accept him into your Bai’at”. The Beloved Habbeb (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) said: “But he is still a child”. Then the Glorious Prophet of Islam (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) caressed Sayyiduna Zahra’s head with his hand and blessed him. Whenever the grandfather of Sayyiduna Zahra took him to the market to buy foodgrains and met Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar and Sayyiduna IbneZubair, they used to say: “Include us in the blessings, which Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) has given you.” Hafiz Ibne-

Hajar elaborates this Hadith saying: “This Hadith proves that the Sahaba were very much fond of seeking the blessings of the Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) through their children.” The servants of the Sahaba used to bring vessels full of water after the Fajr Salaah and the Beloved Habbeb (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) put his hand into the vessels. The Sahaba used that water throughout the day. 2 The Sahaba brought the first yield of their orchards to the Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) who blessed them and gave the fruit to the youngest child present over there. 3 The used water of the Beloved Habbeb (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam)’s ablution was considered as nectar among the Sahaba. They competed with each other to get even a single drop of that water. On one occasion, when Sayyiduna Bilaal took out the water of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam)’s ablution, the Sahaba almost invaded him to obtain some drops of that water. 4 One day the Glorious Prophet of Islam (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) made ablution and left little water in the vessel. The Sahaba took that water and rubbed it on their bodies. 5 Once Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) was getting his head shaved off when the Sahaba arrived and encircled him. The barber was removing the hair and the Sahaba were competing each other in picking up the shaved hair. 6 Once, the Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) touched the forehead of Sayyiduna Abu Makhramah. From that day onward, he never shaved off that portion of his head nor parted his hair. 7

Whenever the Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) visited the houses of his companions, they requested him to bless them. On one occasion, the Glorious Prophet of Islam (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) went to a companion’s house and ate food. When Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) was about to leave the house, the companion held the strings of his horse and prayed to give him blessings. The Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) blessed him for abundance and forgiveness. Once the Glorious Prophet of Islam (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) visited the house of Sayyiduna Sa’d and greeted him with Salaam standing at his door. He replied in a very low voice. His son said: “Why are you not answering the greetings of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam)?” He said: “Keep silent. I want him repeat his greetings.” The Glorious Prophet of Islam (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) repeated the greetings and Sayyiduna Sa’d answered him again in a low voice. The Holy Prophet (Sallallhu Alaihi Wassallam) greeted him for the third time and was about to leave when Sayyiduna Sa’d rushed to him and said: “I was listening your greetings but replying in a low voice so that I could get your greetings again and again.” 8
